In one myth, he fell in love with a beautiful water nymph named Syrinx. One day, when he met her at the end of her hunting, she ran away. He chased her until Syrinx met her sisters who turned her into a reed. When the air blew through her, a beautiful melody came through. Pan was unable to tell, so he cut many reeds and made them into an intsrument, his panpipes.
In another myth, he fell in love with Echo, a nymph who scorned anyone who loved men. Infuriated, Pan killed her and scattered her remains across the earth. The goddess Gaia received these pieces.
