The world has been reigned by the shapeshifters during the First World, the witches during the Second World, the vampires during the Third World, and the humans during the Fourth World. Towards the end of the second millennium - the end of the Fourth World - a prophecy came to the Night World's attention:"Four to stand between the light and the shadow.
Four of blue fire, power in their blood.
Born in the year of the blind Maiden’s vision;
Four less one and darkness triumphs."

After the Millennium Battle - a battle that we lost - the world was plunged into darkness. Chaos is reigning both the Day World and the Night World. Safety is hard to come by.
