At the beginning of Hesperia’s Golden Age, the emperor, Julianus Aurelius Valerianus, had conquered the wild country of Selvaggia. Emperor Valerianus’ armies drove the Selvaggian rebel hoards into north. For the Selvaggian tribes that surrendered to the emperor, Valerianus allowed them to stay and live on their former land. The emperor made a peace treaty with the leader of the surrendered Selvaggians, Ragnar Adalric. The treaty stated that the Selvaggians were free to worship and live the way they wanted as long as they were loyal to the Hesperian Empire. Ragnar agreed to the terms and was allowed to continue his rule. Thus the two countries remained at peace with each other for a time at least.
After five peaceful years, the rebel Selvaggians rebuilt their army. Their leader was a ruthless man called Emerick Leonhardt. He and his army swooped down from the north and pillage every town they came across. They left no survivors. Ragnar Adalric heard of the rebel army and prepared his troops for battle. The two armies met in a valley near Ragnar’s village, Hvitrstyra. They battled for seven days, and by the seventh day, Ragnar’s army was defeated. Unknown to Ragnar, the Hesperian army was on the move. Emperor Valerianus had received news of the rebel army and immediately led his troops to help his Selvaggian ally. When the Hesperian army had reached Hvitrstyra, they found it overrun by the rebels. Valerianus along with his son, Julianus Aurelius Lucianus, mounted a surprise attack on Leonhardt’s army. Outnumbered, Leonhardt withdrew his army back to the north, but not before he got the last word in. During the retreat, Emerick wounded the Emperor fatally with an arrow. Prince Lucianus saw this and swore to avenge his father. As the new emperor of Hesperia, Lucianus had his men search for any survivors of Hvitrstyra. They found a few Selvaggians that had hidden underground during the battle: mostly women and young children. Among the survivors was Ragnar Adalric’s only child, Verena Adalric. Lucianus ordered the survivors to relocate closer to the Hesperian border.
After the relocation, Lucianus and the Hesperian Army went back to Hesperia. Lucianus brought Verena with him since it seemed like to honorable thing to do. Once they returned to the city, many Hesperians delighted in the victory but saddened by the death of their emperor. A vast amphitheater was erected in Valerianus’ name. Peace once again filled the empire of Hesperia, but how long will it last?
With a desire to destroy the Hesperian Empire, Emerick Leonhardt moved his army towards Hesperia, and this time, his rebel army was stronger and larger than ever before. He moved the rebels slowly, not wanting to arouse suspicion in Hesperia, but one noble, Cassius Dominicus Maurus, heard about the advance. Maurus met with Emerick and discussed a partnership. Maurus would supply the rebel army, if they helped him become emperor. Liking the deal, Emerick agreed to it.
Will young Emperor Lucianus rule prosper, or will it be ended by Leonhardt’s army? Whatever you choose…
